Explore PEMF Therapy Specifications

Before you start looking at PEMF devices, it’s important to understand the key specifications so you know exactly what you’re buying and how each specification can influence your experience. Explore the pages below, which break down the four core specifications of PEMF therapy.

What Really Matters When Getting a PEMF Device?

The number one factor that truly matters is choosing a device that fits into your lifestyle and routine. You could have the most advanced PEMF device in the world, but if you don’t use it consistently, none of the specifications will make a difference. Countless studies show that PEMF delivers the best results when used regularly. Some studies report benefits after 2 weeks, but the average timeframe is closer to 4–6 weeks, with many showing continued improvements as use continues. So consistency is key. A device that you can easily use every day, one that fits naturally into your life, is the most important thing to look for when choosing a PEMF device.

What Application Should I Choose?

As a basic recommendation, we always suggest starting with a full-body mat. The human body is holistic and interconnected from head to toe. Five major systems circulatory, lymphatic, nervous, connective tissue, and the meridian/primo vascular system link every cell, tissue, and organ into one dynamic network. To effectively energise these systems, you need the wide coverage and deep reach of a full-body mat. This ensures all 37 trillion cells receive the benefit of PEMF, not just the areas closest to a local applicator.

In an ideal world, you would choose a 2-in-1 device that offers both full-body and localised application. This allows you to use the full-body mat for overall support, while also targeting specific areas using the local applicator. When used together, they create what we refer to as the sandwich effect where the magnetic field from the mat and the applicator meet and enhance the overall field in a particular area. This doesn’t mean the intensity becomes stronger; it simply increases the field density in that region.

Does The Power Source, Weight or Size Matter?

Yes these are arguably some of the most overlooked aspects of PEMF devices. As mentioned earlier, consistency is key, and if a device can only be powered by the mains, or is heavy and bulky, it can massively impact how often you use it. It may sound simple, but if a mat is heavy or awkward to move, you’re far less likely to use it regularly. For some people who plan to keep their device in one location, this won’t be an issue. But for anyone who wants to use it in different rooms or travel with it, a lightweight, battery-powered device can make a huge difference to consistency.

Should I Get a Multi Therapy PEMF Mat?

If you’re looking for a true PEMF mat, then a multi-therapy or infrared PEMF mat is not a good choice. We understand why they seem appealing, they offer five or six (or more) therapies for the same price as some PEMF-only mats, but this all comes at a cost. They end up being the jack of all trades, but master of none, and in this case is it not better than a master of one for PEMF. Many people try to flip the saying, but here it genuinely applies. If you’re still unsure and are considering one of these mats, watch the video below.

FAQs

Are PEMF devices safe?

Yes, PEMF devices are generally very safe when they are built correctly and meet recognised safety standards. The key things that determine safety are proper certifications, such as CE or UKCA, and EMC testing, which ensures the device does not emit excessive stray electromagnetic fields. Safety also comes down to engineering quality. When a device is well-made and transparent about how it works, it is considered safe for everyday use.

Is it dangerous to use the therapy too much?

It is not possible to overdose on PEMF therapy and there are no known negative effects from using it too much.

We do recommend that you follow the manufacturer’s instructions provided with the device and we are happy to answer any additional queries for you if you contact us.

How often would I need use PEMF therapy?

How often you need to use your PEMF device will depend on the system itself, and if you would like personalized advice, please feel free to contact us. However, as a blanket rule, we recommend twice-daily PEMF sessions of at least 20-30 minutes, once in the morning and once in the evening. The effects of PEMF on your cells, on average, will last around 8 hours, so two sessions ensure your cells are always treated. PEMF is just like taking vitamins; it is an ongoing thing that should be used consistently over a longer period of time to achieve optimal results.

You may think finding this time will be hard, but the great thing about PEMF therapy is that you can use your localised device or full-body mat while watching TV, reading, or relaxing, so it is easy to fit it into your day-to-day life.

Is PEMF therapy FDA approved?

PEMF therapy is FDA approved for certain conditions (not all are listed below) and a short timeline of FDA approval is as follows:

  • 1979 – FDA approved PEMF therapy for healing non-union fractures.
  • 1987 – FDA approved for adjunct therapy when treating postoperative edema and pain.
  • 1998 - FDA approved PEMF Therapy for urinary incontinence and muscle stimulation.
  • 2004 - FDA approved PEMF Therapy for cervical fusion patients at high-risk of non-fusion.
  • 2006 - FDA approved PEMF Therapy for treatment of depression and anxiety.
  • 2011 – FDA approved PEMF Therapy for treatment of brain cancer.

2015 - FDA reclassified PEMF devices from their existing Class 3 category to a Class 2 status, and most PEMF devices that are sold today in the United States are FDA registered as wellness devices.

Does a PEMF device need to be a medically registered?

There are two types of PEMF device registrations a manufacturer can choose: medically registered or wellness registered. A medically registered device is certified for medical use, meaning it meets specific regulatory standards. However, it’s important to note that not all PEMF devices are medically registered, often due to the additional costs and processes associated with obtaining medical certification. PEMF devices are considered low-risk products and are not in the same category as high-risk medical devices like pacemakers, so they don’t need to be medically registered and can instead be wellness registered. We have created a whole podcast dedicated to this topic, click here to watch the episode.

While medical registration ensures compliance with specific standards, we believe it does not necessarily make a device better than one that is not medically registered. Both types of devices use the same underlying technology to deliver therapeutic benefits. Medically registered devices may be eligible for VAT exemption in the UK, but for everyday wellness and health maintenance, non-registered devices can be equally effective and more cost-efficient.

Why is device specification transparency important?

Specification transparency is important because it allows you to understand exactly what you are buying. Many PEMF brands publish vague, incomplete, or even misleading information, making it impossible to compare devices properly. Clear transparency means the brand shows real intensity values, waveform type, polarity, and frequency range. These details help you judge quality, performance, and whether the device suits your needs. When a brand hides its specs or uses confusing terminology, it often indicates poor engineering or an attempt to inflate perceived performance. Honest specifications build trust and allow you to make an informed decision.
